Par2: Network speed 2000-03-16 -- Dave Schwartz This may be totally unrelated, but bear with me... there might be a
connection.
We have a Win98 network and DSL. Our Unix box controls the DSL. The Unix
machine was getting about 200k per second transfer rate while the Windows
machines were getting only 25k. A local TCPIP guro told us to check the
settings of the "Browse Master."
Now, I had never heard of "Browse Master." Went to NetWork
Neighborhood>Properties>File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks>Properties
and there it was!
Browse Master (supposedly) should be disabled. When we disabled it, and
rebooted, the Windows machines were almost 9 times faster across the
network!
The guru's story was that the machines "fight each other" to be the "browse
master." By disabling it, the fighting stops.
Don't know if this helps, or even if it exists in NT, but it was worth a
shot.
