Have you tried the phpdev4 package at www.firepages.com.au? It is a zipped up setup of Apache/PHP/MySQL for Windows. No need to mess with setting etc. Just unzip and go. You can have it all running on your PC in minutes. The download is just around 14MB. That way you can get your feet wet with PHP/Apache/MySQL as quickly as possible. That is unless you want to learn all the configuration details of Apache. I took the phpdev4 route myself and that was very helpful. You can always learn the details of httpd.conf at your own pace. (If you go to that site, skip the phpdev5 package and go for the phpdev4 package as it is more stable. phpdev5 is in beta yet).
