We had the same problem with our apps, and did almost the same as you.  But we made 
our 'starter' app a DDE server, and when the 'real' app starts up, it sends an event to 
the 'starter' app to tell it to shut down.  So it doesn't matter how slow or fast our users 
computers are, it always works just fine.
